The home battery storage systems helping reduce the demand for fossil fuels.

There are two reasons to set up a battery storage system at home.

The first, and most obvious, is for those houses with solar panels. During the day, energy captured by solar panels is either used immediately or directed to batteries and stored for later use.

The second, is to store energy taken from the grid at off-peak times; this not only saves money but shifts your energy usage to times of the day when carbon emissions are lower, helping to flatten the curve of energy demands throughout the network.

Across the UK, when more energy is produced than is demanded, energy prices fall, sometimes below zero! This is when suppliers are paid to take energy off the grid.

Check out Octopus's new tariff Octopus Agile which pass on these drops in prices and can enable you to get paid for using the electricity at these off-peak times.

Renewable energy sources, such as Wind and Solar don't produce power in a steady flow. But by balancing the grid, storing excess energy when created, and saving it until the demand is at its peak (between 4-7pm), will can reliably use renewable energy sources to supply the community as a whole, reducing the need to burn as many fossil fuels at peak times.

Below are three startups that are creating safe, high-powered, intelligent battery systems that can be used in the home .

German company Sonnen have produced a battery to store solar energy produced at home, which managed the power use and can share it with the local community.

The sonnenBatterie is not just a battery, it's an intelligent storage system that automatically adjusts the energy usage in your household. In combination with solar panels the sonnenBatterie will enable you to supply yourself with clean energy – thus making you independent and protecting you from energy price hikes.

In the sonnenBatterie they use lithium iron phosphate batteries – the safest lithium battery technology available today.

Sonnen encourage users to join the local community of SonnenBatterie owners to share excess power collected, with those producing the power receiving payment for their contiribution to the community supply.

Our goal is a world in which everyone is able to cover their energy needs with decentralised and clean energy source. Everyone can connect with each other to share energy where and when it's needed. This will emancipate our world from the dependence on fossil fuels and anonymous energy corporations." Christoph Ostermann, Founder

Based in the UK, Powervault have created Powervault 3 and Powervault 3eco , an intelligent battery system for the modern smart home, designed to maximise energy efficiency and value for the customer.

Powervault's batteries allow home users to store energy from their solar panels, and take and store energy from the grid. With the eco option using batteries that have been used in Renault and Nissan electric vehicles, giving a 'Second life' to batteries that are no longer suitable to the car market.

'The Powervault 3eco is a durable, low-cost, low-impact solution driving the shift to a circular economy.' Powervault

Worldwide, we must all get to ‘Net Zero’ carbon emissions by 2050, and your journey starts with Powervault. We can’t control when the sun shines or wind blows, so energy storage is the key to unlocking 100% clean energy. By choosing Powervault you are helping pioneer the sustainable energy transition from your home. POWERVAULT
